Web7 apr 2024 · It’s a two-door, which most people think looks nicer than the four-door (it’s technically a shooting brake), it’s green like all Jeeps since WWII should be, it has a tan interior which matches best with the green paint, it has the wonderful AX-15 five-speed manual, it’s got four-wheel drive, and under the hood is the beloved 4.0-liter straight six. As far as I know the AW4 and AX15 have the same crossmember, my '99 AX15 had a bracket that relocates the transmission mount farther back.

An XJ auto trans has a deep OD, in the low .70's (depends on vintage). An XJ manual is up in the low .80's (same caveat). Bottom line, for a given ratio, you'll spin 100-150 RPMs faster with a manual.......BUT.....you'll need that extra gear off-road, since you have no torque converter slip. So, the above holds. Even my 94 Cherokee 4.0 was a manual. I replaced my 89 YJ, (258), tranny with a T-18 out of a one ton Ford. It did have a 6.29:1 first.
